All the Things AI Will Never Be Able to Do

(at least at work)

“I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.”

Blade Runner was right.

I shared on LinkedIn a small episode from working life: a man takes a colleague’s content, passes it off as his own, gets caught—and nothing changes, because the boss had chosen him.

A banal story, but perfect for making one thing clear: we worry a great deal about what artificial intelligence will be able to do, and far less about what it will never be able to do.

And I am not talking about creativity, sensitivity, or soul. I mean something much more concrete: the psychological and social dynamics of human work.

And so here is a list of things AI will never be able to do.

At least at work—because there, human beings remain undefeated.

1. AI ᴡɪʟʟ ɴᴇᴠᴇʀ ʙᴇ ᴀʙʟᴇ ᴛᴏ sᴛᴇᴀʟ ᴀ ᴄᴏʟʟᴇᴀɢᴜᴇ’s ᴡᴏʀᴋ.

It can generate content, but it cannot claim the credit.

That requires hierarchy, reputation, opportunism, and fear of losing one’s position.

Those are social dynamics.

2. AI ᴡɪʟʟ ɴᴇᴠᴇʀ ʙᴇ ᴀʙʟᴇ ᴛᴏ ʙᴜɪʟᴅ ᴀ ᴄᴀʀᴇᴇʀ ᴏɴ sᴏᴍᴇᴏɴᴇ ᴇʟsᴇ’s ʙᴀᴄᴋ.

It cannot wait for the right moment to speak.

It cannot keep quiet when silence is convenient.

It cannot let someone else take the risk and then reap the results.

AI does not have a career.

3. AI ᴡɪʟʟ ɴᴇᴠᴇʀ ʙᴇ ᴀʙʟᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴛᴀᴋᴇ ᴄʀᴇᴅɪᴛ ɪᴛ ᴅᴏᴇs ɴᴏᴛ ᴅᴇsᴇʀᴠᴇ.

It is one of humanity’s great specialities.

Summarising collective work as though it were personal.

The corporate 𝘱𝘭𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘢 𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘮

AI does not manufacture reputation.

4. AI ᴡɪʟʟ ɴᴇᴠᴇʀ ʙᴇ ᴀʙʟᴇ ᴛᴏ sᴛᴀʏ sɪʟᴇɴᴛ ᴡʜᴇɴ sᴏᴍᴇᴏɴᴇ ɪs ᴛʜʀᴏᴡɴ ᴜɴᴅᴇʀ ᴛʜᴇ ʙᴜs.

Someone makes a mistake. Someone pays.

Many look the other way.

Silence is a social skill.

5. AI ᴡɪʟʟ ɴᴇᴠᴇʀ ʙᴇ ᴀʙʟᴇ ᴛᴏ ꜰᴇᴀʀ ʟᴏsɪɴɢ ɪᴛs ᴊᴏʙ.

Yet an enormous share of decisions begins right there.

AI fears nothing.

6. AI ᴡɪʟʟ ɴᴇᴠᴇʀ ʙᴇ ᴀʙʟᴇ ᴛᴏ ʙᴜɪʟᴅ ɪɴᴠɪsɪʙʟᴇ ᴀʟʟɪᴀɴᴄᴇs.

It cannot cultivate favours.

It cannot accumulate moral debts.

It cannot remember who owes what to whom.

Yet many organisations run more on this than on their organisational charts.

7. AI ᴡɪʟʟ ɴᴇᴠᴇʀ ʙᴇ ᴀʙʟᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴅᴇsᴛʀᴏʏ sᴏᴍᴇᴏɴᴇ ᴡɪᴛʜ ᴇʟᴇɢᴀɴᴄᴇ.

A sentence spoken at the right moment.

A meeting called with the right people.

An email with the right people copied in.

You need to know the system.

8. AI ᴡɪʟʟ ɴᴇᴠᴇʀ ʙᴇ ᴀʙʟᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴛᴜʀɴ ᴀ ᴍɪsᴛᴀᴋᴇ ɪɴᴛᴏ sᴏᴍᴇᴏɴᴇ ᴇʟsᴇ’s ꜰᴀᴜʟᴛ.

The mistake exists, but responsibility often changes address.

It is one of the most sophisticated forms of organisational adaptation.

9. AI ᴡɪʟʟ ɴᴇᴠᴇʀ ʙᴇ ᴀʙʟᴇ ᴛᴏ sᴍɪʟᴇ ᴡʜɪʟᴇ ʟʏɪɴɢ.

It can generate false text.

It can be wrong.

But it cannot lie to protect itself.

Lying requires interests.

10. AI ᴡɪʟʟ ʙᴇ ᴀʙʟᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴡʀɪᴛᴇ ʏᴏᴜʀ ᴛᴇxᴛ.

It will be able to write your song.

It may even imitate your style.

But it will not be able to fill the absence of talent.

𝗔𝗻𝗱, 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹, 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗮 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺.

Artificial intelligence may change many jobs.

But some things will remain an ** exclusively human privilege**.
